ESV vs KJV, Titus-Philemon

Titus: King James Bible vs English Standard Version

1.) ESV 1:2  in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began

KJB "In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;"

The KJB makes it clear that God CANNOT lie, He cannot commit sin. The ESV only says that God doesn't lie, not that He cannot.

2.) ESV 1:4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

KJB "To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour."

The ESV, in attempt to be "gender inclusive", changed "own son" to "true child". The ESV also omitted "mercy" and "Lord" from the text.

3.) ESV 1:6  if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers

KJB "If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly."

The KJB states that the children of pastors should not only be saved, but also "not accused of riot or unruly". The ESV omitted this.

4.) ESV 1:7 For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,

KJB "For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

The ESV watered down "FILTHY lucre" to "greedy for gain".

5.) ESV 1:10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party.

KJB "For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: "

The ESV changed the easy to understand word, "unruly", and changed it to a more difficult word, "insubordinate". The ESV also watered down "VAIN" to "empty".

6.) ESV 1:11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

KJB "Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. "

The ESV omitted "for filthy lucre's sake".

7.) ESV 1:16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

KJB " They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. "

The ESV watered down "ABOMINABLE" to "detestable".

8.) ESV 2:4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,

KJB "That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,"

The ESV omitted "to be sober".

9.) ESV 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,

KJB "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

The ESV, in attempt to be "gender inclusive", changed "men" to "people".

10.) ESV 2:15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

KJB "These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. "

The ESV, in attempt to be "gender inclusive", changed "man" to "one".

11.) ESV 3:2 to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.

KJB "To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. "

The ESV, in attempt to be "gender inclusive", changed "men" to "people".

12.) ESV 3:8 The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.

KJB "This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

The ESV, in attempt to be "gender inclusive", changed "men" to "people".

13.) ESV 3:10 As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him,

KJB "A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; "

The ESV watered down "HERETICK" to "a person who stirs up division".

Philemon

14.) ESV 1:6 and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.

KJB "That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

The ESV omitted "Jesus".
