Are you saved?

The God of the universe, who created all things, exists in three co-equal persons. God is a Trinity.

"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." (1 John 5:7)

The Lord has many attributes.

God is love. (1 John 4:8)

God is merciful. (Psalms 103:8)
God is kind. (Titus 3:4)
God is longsuffering. (1 Timothy 1:16)
God is glorious. (Psalms 104:31)

One of God's most emphasized attributes in the Bible is His RIGHTEOUSNESS and HOLINESS.

"...Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory." (Isaiah 6:3)

The Bible says that God is "of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity" (Habakkuk 1:13). Because God is holy and just, man cannot have fellowship with Him. We are all sinners, therefore we are enemies of God.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (Isaiah 64:6)

"...the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies." (Nahum 1:2)

Psalms 53:

[1] The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
[2] God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
[3] Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one
.

It is commonly thought that all people are "good at heart" and that there is "good in everybody", but the Bible makes it clear that this is not true. The Bible says "there is none that doeth good, no, not one".

The heart of man is very wicked.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9)

"For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man..." (Matthew 15:19-20)

Some people will say, "Well I haven't ever committed murder, so I am not that bad". Look at what the Bible says.

"Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him." (1 John 3:15)

God says that if you have hated someone than you are a murderer. That is because God looks at your heart and judges you based on what is in your heart, not just what you do.

"Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." (Matthew 5:27-28)

"Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart." (Psalms 44:21)

Therefore we are all sinners, spiritually separated from God, and will face the wrath of God.....

"The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God." (Psalms 9:17)

The Bible says that the "unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." (Revelation 21:8)

We have all broken God's commandments..."Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet" (Rom. 13:9)

The Bible says, it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Heb. 9:27)

One day you will stand before God's throne, and He will say,

"Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels...And these shall go away into everlasting punishment..." (Matthew 25:41, 46)

Revelation 20:
[12] And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
[13] And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
[14] And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
[15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire
.

"For our God is a consuming fire."  (Hebrews 12:27)

HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS

"The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him." (Nahum 1:7)

"This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners..." (1 Timothy 1:15)

"And Jesus said...the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:9-10)

The Word of God, Jesus Christ, "bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed." (1 Peter 2:24)

"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:" (1 Peter 3:18)

"He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." (1 John 3:8)

2 Corinthians 5:

[17] Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
[18] And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
[19] To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
[20] Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
[21] For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him
.

Romans 5:

[6] For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
[7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
[8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
[9] Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
[10] For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
[11] And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement
.

The gospel of the grace of God is that Christ was crucified, shedding His blood for our sins.

In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; (Ephesians 1:7)

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (Colossians 1:14)

The Bible says that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22). Which is why God Himself came to Earth as a man, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross for our sins.

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved...how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" (1 Cor. 15:1-4)

All you have to do to be saved is BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, put your faith and confidence in Him alone and the sacrifice He made for you when He died on the cross.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth...For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith." (Rom. 1:16-17)

You cannot receive forgiveness of sins by doing good works! Salvation is a "free gift" given to everyone who puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Romans 3:

[21] But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
[22] Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
[23] For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
[24] Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
[25] Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
[26] To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
[27] Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith
.

If you are trusting in your works such as water baptism, church attendance, prayers, confessing of sins, or anything else, YOU ARE NOT SAVED AND YOU NEED TO TRUST CHRIST.

"Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." (Romans 4:4-5)

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:" (Romans 5:1)

"That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise," (Ephesians 1:12-13)

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Titus 3:

[4] But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
[5] Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
[6] Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
[7] That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life
.

1 Timothy 2:5-6 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

The Bible says that in our flesh dwells no good thing and that you cannot trust in your own flesh to be saved, you can have "NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH" (Phil. 3:3, Rom. 7:18). The Bible says that "they that are in the flesh cannot please God" (Rom. 8:8).

To be saved, you must put your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. Faith in Christ is all you need to be saved. Your works and prayers won't save you.

Getting water baptized won't save you!

"For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God." (1 Corinthians 1:17-18)

Praying the "sinner's prayer" and asking God to save you at an altar won't save you!

"Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth." (John 9:31)

Only believing on the Lord Jesus Christ will save you!

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 1:11-12 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

John 3:
[14] And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
[15] That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
[16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
[17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
[18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God
.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

John 11:
[25] Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
[26] And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
[27] She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world
.

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Acts 13:38-39 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

...God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (2 Cor. 5:19-21)

  1. I've always thought that the argument about easy believism vs. changed life gospel is a misconception based on wording. Obviously it's easy to believe. 'believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.' sounds simple to me. But, I think where people get confused in in the word 'repent.' I do believe that we have to repent to be saved. But, I think that immediately people throw their own definition on the word. Repent has several different meanings. As it pertains to salvation, it means to have godly sorrow. 'Godly sorrow worketh repentance, not to be repented of...' So yes, we do have to repent. We have to be sorry that we sinned in order to think we need someone(Jesus) to save us from our sins(punishment of eternity in hell). I had read on another of your articles that baptists(of which I'm not, but I do like Sam Gipp and I know he professes to be one) say that you need to repent(change your life) to be saved and that's wrong. I just think the word repent confuses people sometimes because it has more than one meaning. Just my thoughts on the topic, and I hope they are of use to you in your ministry for Christ. God bless.

    1. Thank you for the comment. Good points.

I agree that one must "repent" to be saved, and I do believe that the definition of "repent" is a change of mind/heart. I believe that fits every use of the word "repent" in the Bible. And like you said, a change of mind/heart about something is usually due to sorrow. When a sinner hears that he/she is under God's wrath and will go to hell because he/she has sinned against God's commandments, then they will naturally feel sorrow. A sinner hears the bad news of condemnation as a sinner, then has a change of heart about his/her sins and chooses to be saved from them by believing on Christ.

However, though sorrow can be connected with repentance and it is when referring to salvation, the technical definition of repentance cannot be sorrow. Notice in 2 Cor. 7:10 that Paul said "For godly sorrow worketh repentance"....If godly sorrow works repentance, then they have to be different things. Right?

I think that godly sorrow works a change of heart/mind to believe on Christ instead of trusting in a false religion or our own works.

      Thanks again! --Eli Caldwell

    2. I agree. The scriptures say that even the demons believe, so it must be a sincere, effectual repentance and not this "easy believism" or works such as water baptism as a necessity for salvation and the cleansing of our sins. I've been in the churches of Christ (accapella), and have been a pulpit minister , for seven years. However, I do not hold to the predominate necessities in their doctrines (hardliners).

  2. I just came here, as I am working on a Bible study for my wife and my adult daughter. I see how the lady struggles with the word repentance and salvation some. It is no doubt a Baptist sort of issue. I spent some time involved with Baptist churches, and they are very strong on that. They will stress how salvation is a free gift, Ephesians 2:8-9, by grace only, but then will act as if they must earn it. It probably does not affect their salvation, but what it does is harm the relationship that they could enjoy with the Lord, and also the ability to reach the lost. After all, why would someone want what they have, if what they have is based upon works, instead of the faith that the Bible actually promises? I struggled with this for a time, myself, until the Lord brought me down to my knees, in much the same way that an alcoholic must hit rock bottom in order to get sober. I thought I was right, when I actually was not, in many ways, and when the Lord showed me, by allowing me to be body slammed, it hurt, bad. But He loved me through it all, and I came out not only stronger, but even closer to God because of it. I don't know everything, of course. But I do know that my salvation has absolutely nothing to do with me, and everything to do with God, and Jesus shed blood on the cross. My sin is paid for, my sinfulness forgiven, but continual, unfortunately.

  3. Look. Repent means to have a change of mind period. It does not mean feeling sorry. When a lost sinner changes thier mind from unbelief to believing how that Christ died for our sins(He shed His Blood and died on the cross for our sins) and that he was buried and that he rose again from the dead the third day, that person is saved forever and in fact has repented.
Another thing is that saying belive on the Lord Jesus Christ is not preaching the gospel. The gospel of our Salvation is Christ's death, burial, and resurrection and trusting, believing, placing our faith in that alone for Salvation. The person that says they believe the gospel and at the same time believe they need to do any kind work such as be water baptized or say a certain prayer a certain way to be saved is believing in vain. This is what 1Corinthians 15:2 is addressing. And as important as the shed blood and death on the cross is, the resurrection is just as important.
1Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe Jesus died and rose again,(can Paul say it any more clearly than that)

A good reference to show a change of mind from unbelief to believing is repenting is to compare Mark 16:16 the Lord tells Peter and the other apostles He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;(this is the message of the kingdom gospel not Paul's gospel of the grace of God)
    Compared to Acts 2:38
Peter after being told by the Lord they must believe and be baptized tells these Jews Repent(meaning change your minds from unbelief to believing Jesus is the Christ the Son of God) and be water baptized.

Notice in Mark 16:16 the Lord says believe and in Acts 2:38 Peter says Repent. When someone changes thier mind from unbelief to believing they have repented. I hope I explained this clear and simple because it is clear and simple.
