Kingdom of Heaven vs the Kingdom of God

There is much debate over the issue of whether of not the "Kingdom of Heaven" and the "Kingdom of God" are different types of Kingdoms. The Amillennialists insist that they are the same while the dispensational Premillennialists believe that there is a distinction.

We Premillennialists believe that the Kingdom of Heaven is God's heavenly Kingdom that will come to the earth as prophesied in Psalms 2, Isaiah 2, Isaiah 11, Isaiah 60-66, Micah 4, Joel 3, Jeremiah 23, Jeremiah 30-33, etc. This is the Kingdom which Christ spoke of in His model prayer for the Jewish believers of the Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (Matt. 6:10)" Also see Matthew 5:34-35, 19:28-30, 24:1-25:46. The Kingdom of Heaven is a very specific term that always refers to the heavenly Kingdom of God coming to the EARTH, Jerusalem to be precise (Jer. 23:5, Matt. 5:35, Matt. 19:28-30, Isa. 2:1-4). Note: the phrase "Kingdom of Heaven" is only used 32 times in the Bible, all in the book of Matthew.

We believe that the Kingdom of God is a much broader term, one that can refer to anything of which God has ownership. It is used in a general sense to refer to all that God has created and owns, such as in Psalms 103:19 "The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all." However, the main distinction of the Kingdom of God is its use in being applied to the literal SPIRITUAL Kingdom of God that you enter upon being born again. For example,

Luke 17:
[20] And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
[21] Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you
.
John 3:
[3] Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
[4] Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
[5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
[6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit
.

1 Corinthians 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

The literal SPIRITUAL Kingdom of God is never referred to as "the Kingdom of Heaven". Check all the references, the phrase is always used in regards to the literal physical Kingdom coming to the earth from Heaven. But note carefully that the phrase "Kingdom of God" is often used to refer to the Kingdom of Heaven, for it certainly is God's Kingdom. In other words, the Kingdom of Heaven is sometimes referred to as the Kingdom of God, but the Kingdom of God (spiritual kingdom) is never referred to as the Kingdom of Heaven.

That is why some people refuse to believe that there is a distinction between the terms, because sometimes the phrase "Kingdom of God" is used in place of "Kingdom of Heaven". However, the phrase "Kingdom of God" is obviously not always the same thing as the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven requires good works to enter into, the Kingdom of God (spiritual kingdom) only requires being born of the Spirit.

GOOD WORKS AND WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS REQUIRED TO ENTER THE PHYSICAL EARTHLY "KINGDOM OF HEAVEN", ALSO CALLED THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

Matthew 5:
[1] And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
[2] And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
[3] Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[4] Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
[5] Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth
.

Matthew 5:
[18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
[19] Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
[20] For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven
.

Matthew 19:
[16] And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
[17] And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
[18] He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
[19] Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
[20] The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
[21] Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
[22] But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
[23] Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
[24] And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
[25] When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
[26] But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
[27] Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
[28] And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
[29] And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
[30] But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first
.

Good works are required to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, however, to enter into the Kingdom of God (spiritual) all you need is to believe on Christ being born again.

John 1:
[11] He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
[12] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
[13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God
.

John 3:
[1] There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
[2] The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
[6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit
.

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 5:
[24] Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
[25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
[26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word

The physical Kingdom of Heaven can suffer violence (Matt. 11:11-14) but the spiritual Kingdom of God cannot (Rom. 14:17, Luke 17:20-21).

  1. Hey, I appreciate everything you're doing! The kingdom of God vs the kingdom of heaven is a very important doctrine which I have studied A LOT!

My question though is that I only see right now a complete total distinction between the two.

    You said (and I quote):

'sometimes the phrase "Kingdom of God" is used in place of "Kingdom of Heaven". '

Really? Where in the Bible? Is so, are you sure it is not just a similarity between both kingdoms? Like the fact that both kingdoms involve repentance is a similarity right? But similarity is not sameness.

    You also said:

' The literal SPIRITUAL Kingdom of God is never referred to as "the Kingdom of Heaven". '

What about in Matthew 7:21? In the context it refers to the the kingdom of God needing to be seeked first (Matthew 6:33, and the people must do the will of the Father (which is believing in John 6:40).

So to enter in the physical kingdom does one have to believe AND do good works? Or just do good works alone?

    This is very interesting. Thanks.
