BUPTIST: "..........That Bible teachers differ in how they number and classify baptisms (Baker said there was 12 baptisms!) is an issue of how exact and specific they are in distinguishing baptisms in the Bible and an issue of how consistent they are in dividing prophecy from mystery. For example, some think there is only one baptism involving the Spirit and/or one water baptism while others think there is more than one spiritual baptism and/or more than one water baptism. Some distinguish between John's baptism and what they call Pentecostal baptism (though both in view of the kingdom, the difference being that Pentecostal baptism came with the promise of being baptized with the Holy Ghost). Some distinguish the water baptism of Jesus and His baptism of suffering from that of the disciples.
HOSS: True. I very much agree.
BUPTIST: According to how I would classify and list the different baptisms, I see 7 baptisms:
1. Baptism of Israel unto Moses (1 Cor. 10:2)
2. Baptism with water, baptism of repentance for remission of sin (Mk. 1:4; Acts 2:38)
3. Baptism with the Holy Ghost for power (Matt. 3:11; Acts 1:5)
4. Baptism with Fire (Matt. 3:11)
5. Baptism of suffering (Lk. 12:50; 1 Cor. 15:29)
6. Baptism by the Spirit for salvation (1 Cor. 12:13)
7. Baptism (water) by Paul (Acts 16:15,33; 18:8; 19:5)
HOSS: I do not agree with all of that.
1.) Baptism of the earth in judgment (1 Pet. 3:20-21) either with water or fire (Matt. 3:11). Some dispute whether the flood was a baptism, but Peter said "baptism DOTH ALSO NOW save us"......I take that to mean that baptism previously saved Noah. (by separating him from the ungodly)
2.) Baptism WITH water BY an apostle (Mark 1:4, Luke 3:3, Matt. 3:10-11, John 1:31-33, Matt. 28:19, Acts 2:38, Acts 18:8, etc.)
3.) Baptism unto Moses (1 Cor. 10:1-2)
4.) Baptism BY Christ WITH the Holy Ghost ONTO a person (Matt. 3:10-11, Acts 1:5, Acts 10, Joel 2, etc)
5.) Baptism of suffering (Luke 12:50, 1 Cor. 15:29)
6.) Baptism BY the Spirit WITH a person INTO Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-13, Rom. 6:3-4, Gal. 3:26-28, Eph. 4:5, etc.)
That is how I label the baptisms. However, I do not see Paul's water baptism to be different from Peter's. Water baptism was a "like figure" of the washing away of sins but it did NOT put away the filth of the flesh. It was the answer of a good conscience toward God. (Acts 22:16, Hebrews 10:22, 1 Peter 3:21, John 3:25-26, Numbers 8:6-7) Also, Paul did not re-baptize in Acts 19. Why would he? I believe verse 5 is Paul TALKING....I do not believe that it is illustration of what Paul is doing.
Then said Paul, "John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."
BUPTIST: I do not count the various washings of the law as baptism because they are not called baptism in the KJB. Christ's baptism of suffering on the cross was unique but I still classify it under the general heading of the baptism of suffering. His water baptism was also unique in a sense but it was still administered by John and so I classify it under the general heading of baptism with water.
HOSS: Well baptism is a Greek word, it is IMPOSSIBLE for it to appear in the Old Testament (Hebrew writings). John's entire ministry was under the law dispensation.
