My short answer is: both. We have to believe in Christ (our faith) but we are then instantly and permanently justified by the faith of Christ. "even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ" (Gal. 2:16)
Also, here is a quote from my statement of faith.
"Under grace we are justified by the faith of Christ, not our own faith. Christ was always faithful to the Father's will and never failed to live by the word of God (John 8:29, Matt. 3:17-4:10). Christ is Faithful and it is by His faith that we are justified by (1 Cor. 1:9, 1 Thes. 5:23-24, 2 Thes. 3:3, 2 Tim. 2:13, Rom. 3:22, Gal. 2:16-20, 3:22, Eph. 3:12, Phil. 3:9). We are not justified by our own faith. The moment we believe on Christ we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and put into Jesus Christ, we receive instant justification through His faith (Eph. 1:13, 3:12). This is unlike past dispensations when receiving imputed righteousness and receiving justification happened at different points in time. Abraham received imputed righteousness in Genesis 15:6 for believing the word of God, but it was not until he lived faithfully doing works of righteousness for many more years when he received justification (James 2:21-23). This is not true under grace, as seen in 2 Timothy 2:13 "If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself."
Galatians 3:
[22] But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
[23] But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
[24] Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
[25] But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
In past administrations God justified people based on their own faith, which is the faith of man (Hab. 2:4). The faith of man is not perfect at once, it must be tried and proven in order to be found unto praise and honor by the Lord (James 1:3, 1 Pet. 1:7). That is why in the Law and Kingdom administrations justification does not come to an individual until after his faith has been proven and tried through works of righteousness (1 Pet. 1:5-9, James 2:14-26). This justification by the faith of man system will continue in Daniel's 70th week and the Millennium."
It is also worth noting that all the modern perversions of the Bible change "faith OF Christ" to "faith IN Christ". Which shows the superiority of the King James Bible. If faith "in" Christ and the faith "of" Christ was the same thing, Galatians 2:16 would be very redundant.
